The Evolution of Mosquito Net

The Evolution of Mosquito Net

Mosquito net clothing, as we know it today, is a modern solution to an ancient problem. For centuries, humans have been finding creative ways to protect themselves from insects.

One of the earliest forms of protection dates back to Japan with Kaya netting, used as early as the 13th century. These fine nets were draped over beds to protect sleepers from mosquitoes and other biting insects. This idea spread across many cultures, evolving into different forms of mosquito nets over time.During the 18th and 19th centuries, mosquito nets became essential in regions prone to mosquito-borne diseases like Yellow Fever and malaria. The Victorian era took it a step further with their elegantly draped sleeping nets, popularized in artworks like John Singer Sargent's The Mosquito Net (1910), where people are depicted shielded from bugs while lounging indoors.

The First U.S. Patent for Mosquito Clothing
Interestingly, while protective netting was already in use, the first patent for a mosquito net garment wasn't filed until 1893 by Emma F.A. Bushnell. Her patent (as shown in the attached drawings) outlines a "Pocket Outdoor Mosquito Cap" designed to protect the head and neck, signaling the beginning of wearable mosquito netting that would eventually lead to the bug jackets and suits we have today.
